Bain council announces dances

The Bain Center Council is presenting a series of dances from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on selected Fridays at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way.

The Goldenaires Orchestra will provide music for this week's dance; Ray Mercer will play for the Aug. 8 dance. Dances are also planned for Sept. 12, Oct. 10, Nov. 14 and Dec. 12.

Admission is $5. This week's event and the November dance are "Dance for a Donation."

Military
Graduates Coast Guard Seaman Apprentice Gongtao Sun, son of Yulan Liu and Ming J. Sun of Columbia, recently graduated form the U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, N.J., and was promoted to his present rank. He is a 2006 graduate of Grace Bible Baptist High School in Baltimore.

Completes training Navy Seaman Recruit Christina K. Harland, a 2005 graduate of Wilde Lake High School, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. She is the daughter of William H. Harland of Columbia.

Around Town
Theater camp Slayton House Camp of the Arts is accepting registration for its musical theater camp for children who have completed full-day kindergarten and those in first through seventh grades. Available camp dates are tomorrow through July 25, and July 28 through Aug.8. A limited number of scholarships may be available. Kathy Verheul, 410-730-3987.

Play groups The Town Center Community Association is accepting registration for the summer session of Parents & Tots Play Groups. The session begins this week. Each group is limited to 15 children. The groups meet weekly at Historic Oakland, 5430 Vantage Point Road. The cost is $20 for Columbia residents; $22 for nonresidents. Siblings can enroll for half price. Classes fill rapidly. Senior Wii club Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will offer a Wii Club for ages 55 and older, at 10a.m. Tuesdays at the Bain Center. Participants can improve hand-eye coordination and get some exercise while competing against their peers in the interactive video game. The first game is free. 410-313-7320.

Mah-jongg Those ages 18 or older are invited to Slayton House in Wilde Lake Village Center for mah-jongg at 10 a.m. Wednesdays. Admission is free. Participants are invited to bring a game and attend with a friend. 410-730-3987.

For preschoolers Classes for preschoolers at the Central Library are designed to teach creative expression and social skills, increase comprehension and lay the foundation for reading through letter and number recognition, and build vocabulary.

"What's in My Art Box?" a class for ages 3-5 with an adult, will be offered at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Wednesday. The focus will be on the concept of form. Color will be the focus at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. July 23. Registration is required.

• Storybook Friends" for ages 2-5 with an adult, offers a story and a craft to enjoy with your child. The class will be held at 1 p.m. July 15, and the story will be Eric Carle's The Very Quiet Cricket. Registration begins Tuesday. 410-313-7860.
