Chicago Cubs hitting coach might be able to help him against left-handers

Many in the Cubs' front office think they would be foolish to give up Starlin Castro to get Curtis Granderson , but there are a lot of other ways to do the deal. General manager Jim Hendry appreciates all Granderson brings to the table, even though he has had trouble hitting left-handers in two of the last three seasons. Perhaps Granderson would benefit from working with new Cubs hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo. … The Brewers apparently have decided not to re-sign catcher Jason Kendall (right). GM Doug Melvin says he's going to look at less expensive alternatives in prospects Jonathan Lucroy, Angel Salome and George Kottaras, who recently was claimed off waivers from the Red Sox. … Former White Sox reliever Scott Radinsky will be Manny Acta's bullpen coach with the Indians. He has spent the last six years as a pitching coach in the Indians' system. … Center fielder Matt Kemp and second baseman Orlando Hudson give the Dodgers their first pair of Gold Glove winners to play a full season together since Steve Garvey and Andy Messersmith in 1975. … Aroldis Chapman isn't the only Cuban pitcher drawing attention. Noel Arguelles, a 20-year-old lefty who defected alongside shortstop Jose Iglesias at a 2008 tournament in Canada, reportedly is getting close to signing. The A's, Rays and Rangers are among the teams that have confirmed interest. The White Sox gave third baseman Dayan Viciedo a $10 million deal last winter that could make it tough for them to spend heavily again. … It's ridiculous for anyone to paint Tim Lincecum as the "sabermetrics candidate" in the NL Cy Young race. He's a great pitcher, as are the Cardinals' Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter. If I had been voting, I would have had it Wainwright, Lincecum and Carpenter.

Team has payroll room, needs aplenty; MacPhail says club will be more active

With a down economy, multiple teams crying poor and little money invested in future payrolls, the Orioles are arguably in a better financial position this offseason than they have been in more than a decade. Simply put, if the Orioles want to be buyers this winter, they're in a good spot to do it. "It's the fun part of the job. This is the time for us to go up and hit," Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said.
