Selection process exhausts jury pool; Dixon, lawyers pore over hundreds of questionnaires

Mayor Sheila Dixon is spending her day poring over hundreds of jury questionnaires as she and her attorneys select the 12 citizens to sit for her theft trial. In her first trip to court since being indicted in January, the mayor walked through the front door of Courthouse East in downtown Baltimore just after 9 a.m. Until now, her defense team has handled proceedings on her behalf. Dixon, 55, is accused of buying person items with retail gift cards that local developers donated to her office for needy families.

I t was a day packed with official events for Mayor Sheila Dixon: approving millions of dollars in contracts at a Board of Estimates meeting, holding a news conference to urge parents to vaccinate their children against swine flu , pushing health care reform at a town hall meeting, surprising a Baltimore school with a visit, even playing bingo at a senior center that she had fought to keep open.

Taxpayers might wind up paying fees of her seven defense lawyers

Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon's legal bills, racked up during a years-long corruption probe that has led her to enlist seven criminal defense attorneys for a theft trial next week, could run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, legal observers say. Yet city residents have no idea how their elected leader plans to pay. Dixon's chief attorneys, Arnold M. Weiner and Dale P. Kelberman, have consistently declined to explain whether they are working pro bono or how they are being compensated. The mayor, too, has been mum.

He, Schock advise students at Hopkins to stay involved

The Republican National Committee chairman told a Johns Hopkins University student audience Thursday night that they were "not the future" of politics, but were in fact at the center of it today.
