They're not as fearsome as a white whale on the high seas, or as portentous as a white buffalo calf on the Great Plains. But a handful of white squirrels is causing a stir in Maryland.

<description>A Virginia Military Institute freshman from Howard County died Saturday after completing a 10-mile road march, VMI officials said. John Alexander Evans, 19, of Highland, collapsed in his room after completing the training march Saturday with members of his class. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly after noon, officials said. Evans was an international studies major and member of the Marine Corps ROTC program. The medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

<description>A janitor can make a difference, and Chuck Sands proved it. He died recently, and unexpectedly, and there's been such an outpouring of grief and love from Howard County - and from the students of Centennial High School, specifically - that I just had to take a moment here to tell you a little about their head custodian.
