Smoking is a lightning rod for controversy, as is the question of whether workers who smoke should have to pay more for their health insurance.

<description>Flight attendants at United Airlines and US Airways Group Inc. said there would be "significant obstacles" to any combination of the two carriers unless labor relations are addressed first. There is an "adversarial labor environment" at both companies, making merger discussions "foolhardy," the presidents of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA union chapters at each carrier said yesterday.

<description>UBS, the largest Swiss bank, said yesterday that it expected to cut about 5,500 jobs, including 2,600 in its investment banking unit, as it announced a first-quarter loss of about $10.9 billion. The investment banking job cuts, which come on top of the 1,500 positions eliminated since October, will fall most heavily on businesses in the United States and Britain, the chief executive, Marcel Rohner, said.

<description>Employers cut far fewer jobs in April than in recent months and the unemployment rate dropped to 5 percent, a better-than-expected showing that nonetheless reveals strains in the nation's labor market.
